Date of Service: April 29, 2026
Location: Nashville, Tennessee
Vehicle: 2012 Buick LaCrosse 3.6L V6
Service Performed: Check Engine Light Diagnostic (P0420 – Catalytic Converter Efficiency)
Business: Mobile Mechanic Co. – 615-795-1347
Background (Previous Repair)
A few weeks prior, the customer contacted us to replace a high-pressure fuel pump on their 2012 Buick LaCrosse due to failure.
We:
Replaced the high-pressure fuel pump
Test drove the vehicle
Verified that the engine was running smoother and performing properly
At that time, everything checked out and the vehicle was operating as expected.
New Issue
A few weeks later, the customer reached out again after a check engine light came on.
They mentioned:
No major drivability issues at the moment
Concern about the warning light
Wanting to prevent further damage
Based on the timing, this is something I’ve seen before—issues caused by previous engine problems showing up later.
Diagnostic Process
When I arrived in Nashville, I performed a full diagnostic on:
Exhaust system
Oxygen (O2) sensors
Catalytic converter performance using live data
Diagnostic Code:
P0420 – Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)
Technician Findings (Live Data Analysis)
Here’s what the diagnostic showed:
Customer had a catalytic converter efficiency code P0420. We ran a diagnostic using live data and determined that Bank 1 catalytic converter was failing. The graph from live data shows textbook failure of a catalytic converter.Based on live data testing, your Bank 1 catalytic converter has failed. The downstream oxygen sensor is showing the same switching pattern as the upstream sensor, which indicates the converter is no longer properly filtering exhaust gases. The oxygen sensors themselves are functioning correctly — they’re accurately reporting what’s happening in the exhaust. Because of that, the issue isn’t with the sensors but with the catalytic converter losing efficiency. The proper repair is to replace the Bank 1 catalytic converter. I also recommend replacing the downstream oxygen sensor at the same time as preventative maintenance to avoid future issues.
What This Means (Simplified)
In simple terms:
The catalytic converter is no longer cleaning exhaust gases effectively
The O2 sensors confirmed the issue (they are working correctly)
This is a confirmed catalytic converter failure, not a sensor problem
This is important because many people replace sensors first—but in this case, that would not fix the issue.
Why This Happened
This type of failure can happen when:
The engine was previously running improperly (like with a bad fuel pump)
Excess fuel or improper combustion damages the catalytic converter over time
Even though the fuel pump issue was fixed, the damage to the catalytic converter had already occurred earlier.
Recommended Repair
To properly fix the issue:
Replace Bank 1 catalytic converter
Replace downstream oxygen sensor (recommended preventative maintenance)
This will restore proper emissions function and turn off the check engine light.
Why Proper Diagnostics Matter
This job is a perfect example of why accurate diagnostics are critical:
Prevents unnecessary parts replacement
Identifies the root cause of the issue
Saves time and money in the long run
Ensures the correct repair is performed the first time
