Chevrolet Camaro Overheating Diagnosis in Brentwood, TN – When a Thermostat Isn’t the Real Problem

I was called out to Brentwood, Tennessee to inspect a Chevrolet Camaro that was overheating. The customer had already received a diagnosis from a dealership stating that the issue was a faulty thermostat.

However, this job turned into a perfect example of why accurate diagnostics matter—and how overheating issues can sometimes point to much more serious engine damage.

Customer’s Concern

The customer explained:

  • Vehicle was overheating

  • Dealership diagnosed a bad thermostat

  • Wanted a mobile mechanic to replace it on-site

This is a common request, especially when customers are trying to save time and avoid towing or dealership wait times.

Initial Repair – Thermostat Replacement

I replaced the thermostat as requested. This is typically a straightforward repair and often resolves overheating issues when the thermostat is stuck closed.

After completing the job, I tested the vehicle…

➡️ The engine was still overheating

At this point, it was clear that the thermostat was not the root cause.

Further Diagnosis – Block Test

To dig deeper, I performed a block test to check for combustion gases in the cooling system.

Result:

  • Test fluid changed from blue to yellow

This result indicates the presence of combustion gases in the cooling system, which strongly points to:

  • Blown head gasket

  • Or internal engine damage

What Happened?

During the conversation, the customer also mentioned:

  • The vehicle had been driven while overheating

  • Their son attempted to drive it home despite the temperature rising

Unfortunately, continuing to drive an overheating engine is one of the fastest ways to cause severe damage.

Final Diagnosis

Based on:

  • Persistent overheating after thermostat replacement

  • Positive block test (combustion gases detected)

  • History of driving while overheating

The engine was determined to have major internal damage.

At this stage, typical next steps would involve:

  • Engine repair (head gasket job)

  • Or full engine replacement depending on severity

Why Overheating Should Never Be Ignored

From real-world experience, overheating can escalate quickly. What starts as a minor issue (like a thermostat) can turn into major engine damage if not addressed immediately.

Common causes of overheating include:

  • Faulty thermostat

  • Coolant leaks

  • Radiator issues

  • Water pump failure

  • Cooling fan problems

  • Head gasket failure (more serious)

Common Issues on Chevrolet Camaro

While working on Camaros, I frequently see:

  • Cooling system problems (thermostat, radiator, water pump)

  • Oil leaks over time

  • Ignition system wear (coils, plugs)

  • Sensor-related check engine lights

  • Brake system maintenance
