Customer Complaint
I received a call from a customer in Antioch about their 2011 Jeep Patriot making clunking noises from the front end. They also mentioned the vehicle didn’t feel stable while driving, especially over bumps.
Other symptoms included:
Steering felt loose
Uneven tire wear
Noise when going over potholes or rough roads
These are common signs of worn suspension components.
Inspection & Diagnosis
After inspecting the vehicle, I found the issue right away:
Control arm bushings were severely cracked and worn
Components had excessive play
Mounting hardware was heavily rusted
At this point, the control arms were no longer supporting the suspension properly and needed to be replaced.
The Repair (More Labor Than Usual)
This job turned out to be more involved than a typical control arm replacement due to the condition of the hardware.
During removal:
Bolts were seized and heavily rusted
Standard removal methods didn’t work
I had to use a metal grinder to safely cut the bolts in order to remove the old control arm
This added extra labor time, but it was necessary to complete the repair properly and safely.
Steps performed:
Safely lifted and secured the vehicle
Removed damaged control arm (cutting seized hardware)
Installed new control arm with fresh hardware
Ensured proper fitment and torque
Rechecked suspension movement and stability
Result
After the repair:
Front-end noise was eliminated
Steering felt tighter and more controlled
Vehicle handled bumps much more smoothly
Overall driving stability improved significantly
The difference was noticeable right away.
Why Control Arms Fail
On vehicles like the Jeep Patriot, control arms can wear out over time due to:
Normal wear and tear
Road conditions (potholes, rough roads)
Aging rubber bushings
Lack of maintenance over time
If not addressed, worn control arms can affect alignment, tire wear, and overall safety.
