Customer Situation
I received a call from a customer in La Vergne who had recently hit a curb, which caused damage to the driver-side suspension on their 2018 Chevrolet Equinox.
After the impact, the vehicle didn’t feel right and they were concerned about driving it safely.
Customer Complaint
The main concerns were:
Vibration while driving
Clicking or knocking noise when turning
Vehicle pulling to one side
Visible issue with the driver-side wheel area
These are common signs of axle and suspension damage after an impact.
Inspection & Diagnosis
When I inspected the vehicle, I found multiple issues on the driver side.
Key findings:
Driver-side CV axle was damaged
Boot was compromised and axle integrity was affected
Suspension components showed signs of impact
Wheel and tire also had visible damage
The CV axle is responsible for transferring power from the transmission to the wheel while allowing for movement and steering. Once damaged, it can cause vibration and noise and should be replaced promptly.
The Repair
To restore proper function, I replaced the driver-side CV axle.
Steps performed:
Safely lifted and secured the vehicle
Removed the damaged CV axle
Inspected surrounding components for additional issues
Installed a new CV axle
Reassembled components and secured everything properly
Tested for smooth operation
This repair is critical to ensure the vehicle drives safely and smoothly.
Total time on-site was about 1.5–2 hours.
Result
After the repair:
Vibration was eliminated
No more clicking noise when turning
Power transfer to the wheel was smooth
Vehicle was much more stable to drive
Note: Due to the impact, I also recommended a wheel alignment and further inspection of the wheel and tire to ensure everything is within proper specification.
Why CV Axles Get Damaged
CV axles can fail due to:
Impact with curbs or potholes
Torn CV boots leading to grease loss
Wear over time
When damaged, they can cause:
