Recently, I completed a valve cover gasket replacement and serpentine belt replacement on a 2007 Toyota 4Runner in Nashville, Tennessee. These are very common maintenance repairs on older Toyota SUVs, especially once they reach higher mileage.
This job is a good example of how small leaks and worn components can eventually turn into larger reliability issues if left unattended.
Customer’s Concern
The customer contacted me because they noticed:
Burning oil smell while driving
Oil residue around the engine bay
Squealing noise during startup
Visible wear and cracking on the serpentine belt
The vehicle was still running, but the symptoms were becoming more noticeable over time.
On-Site Inspection in Nashville, TN
After inspecting the 4Runner, I confirmed:
Valve cover gasket was leaking engine oil
Oil seepage was present around the valve cover area
Serpentine belt showed signs of wear and cracking
Oil leaks from valve cover gaskets are very common on older Toyota engines due to heat and gasket deterioration over time.
The worn serpentine belt was also something that needed attention before it risked breaking unexpectedly.
The Repair
For this repair, I:
Removed components necessary to access the valve covers
Replaced the leaking valve cover gaskets
Cleaned oil residue around the affected areas
Installed a new serpentine belt
Inspected belt routing and pulley condition
Once completed:
✅ Oil leak was resolved
✅ Engine bay cleaned up significantly
✅ Belt noise eliminated
✅ Vehicle operating normally again
Why Valve Cover Gaskets Leak on Toyota 4Runners
On the 2007 Toyota 4Runner, valve cover gasket leaks commonly happen because:
Rubber gaskets harden over time
Constant engine heat causes deterioration
Mileage and age eventually weaken the seals
If ignored, leaking oil can:
Cause burning oil smells
Create engine bay mess
Leak onto other components
Lead to additional repairs later on
Why Serpentine Belt Maintenance Matters
The serpentine belt powers critical engine accessories such as:
Alternator
Power steering
Water pump
Air conditioning compressor
When belts become cracked or worn, they can eventually fail and leave the vehicle stranded.
Common signs of belt wear include:
Squealing noises
Cracking on the belt surface
Fraying edges
Intermittent accessory issues
Common Problems on the 2007 Toyota 4Runner
While servicing Toyota 4Runners, these are some repairs I frequently encounter:
Valve cover gasket oil leaks
Suspension wear (control arms, shocks)
Brake system maintenance
Radiator and cooling system issues
Wheel bearing noise
Serpentine belt and pulley wear
Starter and alternator issues over time
These SUVs are known for reliability, but routine maintenance becomes increasingly important as mileage climbs.
